I know this is a bit last month, but I wanted to post about something involving creativity as an act, rather than a parenting philosophy. So! Want to see the fake sword I made for Halloween? The theme for my friend's Halloween party this year was Dungeons and Dragons.

So, I've been kind of in love lately with the idea of the Tardis dress. I'm not really that big into Doctor Who - I watched several episodes last season and it was a fun show, but I haven't carved out the time yet to go back and catch up on the last few years of story. But the cosplayers who make Tardis dresses are really inspiring. I love the idea of that mechanical object being re-envisioned. (And I kind of wish I'd thought to do a Heavyarms dress the last time the Solacium crew were at Y-Con.) So, feeling all inspired and whatnot, I decided to make a 20-sided die dress, and that I needed a weapon to go with it.

Now the dress, I am not so happy with. The concept is fine, but the fit wasn't so great (I looked like a balloon), the lacings on the bodice of the topdress pulled out when I put it on, and the fabric paint I used to make the dice numbers smeared all over the place and globbed up in ways that made me unhappy. So I'm considering it a prototype, and pondering ways to make it suitable for public viewing.

The sword, however, I like. It too still needs work - I'd like to give it a couple more coats of paint, a good layer of aging, and more decoration. But for something made out of craft foam, cheesecloth, a wooden dowel, and a drapery rod finial, I'm pretty pleased.

Each one of the triangles was supposed to have a little rhinestone in it (20 triangles, one for each side of the die), but I just ran out of time. I would also like to find a bigger one for the hilt, and rebuild the bit that sticks out of the hilt so it looks more like a D20. And I'd like to put the name on it somewhere - Critical Hit, because what else would a sword carried by a D20 be named? My initial idea was to also have a scythe called Critical Failure, but again, ran out of time.

So that's that. My next bout of creativity will involve window treatments. Yay?
