I have a nerd confession to make.

I don't like zombies.

They're icky.

I've never been a big fan of gore or graphic horror. I don't like slasher flicks. I've just about had an ass-full of Tarantino-esque splatter porn. Look, I get it - our insides are all made up of squishy goopy things that are wet, sticky with blood, and make gooshing noises when they are forcibly removed from our bodies and thrown to the floor. I just happen to feel about my insides the way most people feel about their parents having sex - I know it's a thing that happens; I just don't want to have to look at it. And since zombies are pretty much a compilation of all the icky inside bits brought out into the light of day, I just have a really, really hard time with them. They gross me out, man.

And the zombie apocalypse! Christ on a bike. When my dad was still working, one of his friends would occasionally bring up the notion that when the nukes started falling, they would pack up their families and head up to the Big Bear Mountains to wait out the disaster, far away from the LA basin. And my dad would roll his eyes and mutter, "Yeah, sure - good luck". When teenaged me asked him what our plan to escape the nukes was, he looked at me as if I'd lost all higher brain function, and then explained patiently that we lived in the heart of first-strike territory, and we'd have just about enough time to tell each other goodbye and get comfortable before we were just so much vapor. I have a similar reaction when the beau and his buddies start in on the whole zombie apocalypse thing - the eyeroll and a hearty "Good luck, Buddy" pretty much sum up how far I'm willing to discuss the topic.

All that said, the boy has been begging, pleading, and cajoling me to watch "The Walking Dead" with him. I had been resisting, and then he brought out the big guns: "Jennifer (his stepmom) watches it. She's not scared of zombies. Are you more chicken than she is?"

...

...

...

And this is how I started watching "The Walking Dead". Even though I really, really don't like zombies. And am watching it with my hands over my eyes most of the time, because it's SUPER icky. We're about 6 episodes into the first season.

...it's actually pretty damn good.
